Personal Disaster Plan (Spring 2006) << Back
The devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina drive home the point that personal catastrophe planning is an essential part of any personal risk management program. Catastrophes, like earthquakes in California, can strike individuals and families at any time. You should develop a comprehensive disaster plan that addresses the following items:
1. Identify hazards in your home such as frayed wires or large amounts of gasoline stored in the garage. These hazards should be reduced as much as possible.
2. Learn first aid and CPR skills, which will lessen injuries after they occur.
3. If you have children, make certain that they learn your full name, address and telephone number as earliest as possible.
4. Develop an emergency evacuation plan. Establish escape routes from your home and rehearse them periodically.
5. Establish a disaster meeting place and an outside immediate family contact. A location outside of home should be arranged. Consider designating a friend or relative in another city as a common contact through whom the family can communicate if separated by as disaster.
6. Keep adequate water storage to use in the event you are stuck in your home. Several days' supply of drinking water should be kept in a cool, dark place.
7. Prepare food supplies. Include canned meats, fruits and vegetables. Include a manual can opener and disposable utensils and plates.
8. Store emergency supplies, such as a first aid kit, flashlights, batteries, prescriptions and a lantern.
9. Prepare a portable pet disaster supply kit for your pets if applicable. Provide proper identification of your pets.
10. Practice, modify and maintain the plan every year.
