Protect Your Online Identity (Fall 2007) << Back
Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in our nation today. According to the Federal Trade Commission, more than 20% of Identity Thefts comes from Telecommunications and the internet. Here are a number of preventive measures that you can take when you are on the internet to protect your personal information.
1. Create passwords that would be difficult for others to guess. A combination of letters and numbers should be used if at all possible. Avoid using birthdates, family names, and other familiar information.
2. Avoid clicking on pop-up ads or downloading material from unknown sites.
3. When accessing financial or other sensitive information, use your own personal computer.
4. After finishing a transaction on any website, be sure to log off when done.
5. Do not give any personal information to unknown parties online or by e-mail.
6. Do not use free public wireless internet connections for personal or financial transactions.
7. Use and update anti-virus and anti-spyware software on a regular basis.
8. Beware of account verification or "phisher" scams. These scams purchase domain names similar to legitimate companies and request that you verify credit card or other personal identity information.
Remember that the internet has no territorial limits. It allows world-wide access to your identity if you don't take the above precautions.
